The Process
Going Green doesn’t mean hugging a tree but encompasses a much bigger thought process WHAT CAN BE REUSED, REDUCED or RECYCLED instead of just thrown away.
When the Army decided to change their uniform from the Battle Dress Uniform (BDU) to the Army Combat Uniform (ACU), there would be a surplus of the old BDUs that could either be just discarded or they could be reused in another capacity. My process reuses old uniforms – both BDUs and ACUs as well as the uniforms of other services and organizations – and this process is environmentally friendly. Everyone wins when an item is reused instead of disgarded – so GO GREEN WITH TAMASINE!!
I acquire my uniforms through many means:
-
Donation– as a military family we have many friends in all the military services. They are aware of my business so they donate their old uniforms and also uniforms as they fade or become unwearable for many reasons. I appreciate all donations.
-
Purchase – I visit Thrift Shops on military posts in areas that I am in and purchase the uniforms. This is a WIN-WIN situation because the thrift shop gains income and I gain my material.
-
From the Consumer – many of the items I have made will be presented for birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, Christmas to name but a few purposes. People like to use the service members own uniforms to give the item even more meaning then just supporting our troops!! This is a great way to honor someone’s service. I’ve made many custom pieces where we use the nametapes and patches the soldier has received and put them on aprons and handbags. My own handbag has an orange center for my Signal Corps service and on the no pocket side has many of the unit patches I wore during my 20 years.
I like to think I’m a pig farmer – I use everything but the squeeeeeeel!!:-)
If you have an idea you would like me to consider just drop me an email!
